Symptoms and Facts:
Originally described by Gilles
de la Tourette in 1885
The cause may be genetic
Tics may be experienced as compulsions
(Biswell & Ulmer, 1998)
4 to 5 people per 10,000 have Tourettes
Disorder
Average age of onset of motor tics
7 years old
Average age of onset of vocal tics
11 years old
Commonly have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivy
Disorder and/or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Cause of Tourette's
Research indicates abnormal and decreased functioning
of some parts of the brain controlling movement (motor
cortex and supplementary motor cortex, basal ganglia,
globus pallidus).
Treatment
Limited research supports the use of Neurofeedback
to decrease symptoms of Tourette's disorder including
both motor (movement) and verbal tics (Tansey, 1986). |
